Here are some online videos and demonstrations that may challenge people’s conceptions of learning and understanding and instruction. I’m showing these to students in my class (I’m using Moodle btw, it’s rockin so far).
- The Minds of Our Own video, Parts One, Two, and Three. Really you just need to watch the first 5 minutes or so of each part at least. As an opening, graduates of Harvard and MIT are given a battery, bulb, and wire. Can they make the bulb light? (btw this will explain why the PHET circuit simulation applet has such a detailed bulb model)
- A Private Universe – an earlier video produced by the same team that produced the above one.
- The first couple chapters of the book How People Learn.
- The Five Minute University – an example comedy routine oft cited by Bransford and others. What do you remember from college 5 years after you graduate?
- This is a little more advanced, but I liked this talk: Experience is not something we feel but something we do, which is a layman’s introduction to change blindness and enactive perception by Kevin O’Regan. Daniel Simons also has some of the original change blindness videos online.
- A student at UGA also wrote a nice intro on Conceptual Change
